The starting point

The brief

A nursery garden for two- to five-year-olds needing hands-on, open-ended play the youngest children could reach and control.

What we built

In the finished space

  • Hand-built timber water wall
  • Channels, dams and pouring vessels
  • Hand pump at child height
  • Adjacent sand and digging area

How it's used

The difference it makes

Very young children can pour, dam, redirect and experiment on their own terms, with adults nearby rather than leading.

We use the recognised types of play as a design lens rather than a checklist, so a single structure can offer several very different kinds of play.
